It is with great pride that I announce here on my blog that the second of my 2009 golfing goals has been met. I set out to break 80 this year from the tips and this past Sunday I shot a 78 from the black tees at my home course, Schneiter’s Bluff Golf Course! I’m really excited about it as I believe I got a glimpse of what it takes to be a good golfer. I shot 42 on the opening nine and then bogueyed 10 and 12 to start out the back. They are actually 2 of the easier holes, so I could have been pretty discouraged, but I just decided to keep plugging away. I missed my birdie on the first par 5 at #13 simply because of a ridiculous pin placement and then I felt I was running out of holes. However, I did manage to birdie the 15th hole to get back to 1 over on the back and 7 over on the round. I just needed to par out.
I had a great up and down on 16, a tap in par on 17 and then holed a 30 foot birdie putt from off the green on 18 to shoot 36 on the back nine. The last 4 holes, I just felt so focused…I didn’t hit shots perfectly, but I minimized my mistakes and took advantage when I could. Those last 4 holes, I think I got a taste of the kind of mental focus I need to consistently shoot in the 70’s. Haven’t been out since then, but I am looking to do it a couple more times before I go to Georgia and play Grand Island again. I shot 81 from the blues there last year…I’m going to move up to the big boys’ tees and try to break 80 there as well.
Eventually I will get around to setting some goals for 2010, but I need to think about it. With a season pass at Schneiter’s already in my pocket, I should be heading for my best scoring year and I have my sights set on the State Amateur qualifying again.
