Last month I lost two friends to cancer. I’d love for you to hear more about them…
Brandon Winger was a sweet 13 year old boy that I only met last year through the students in our church’s student group. In the last month of his life, I had the opportunity to talk with him about Jesus. The best part of that time was getting to share with him about how the Jesus that he believed in died for him and it was ENOUGH. That God’s grace would be sufficient in spite of anything he might have done. I know that message meant a lot to Brandon and I am hopeful that he put his faith in Christ alone for his salvation. Brandon comes from a great family and it’s been such an honor to get to know them through all of this. The balloons in the picture above were set free at Brandon’s funeral.
The night that I last spoke with Brandon, I wrote a verse and chorus of a song for him. The day he died two weeks later, I finished the song and then shared it with my church that Sunday. It seems that God was preparing my heart for another event that I knew was soon to come…
The very next week, one of my good friends from high school, Amy Horton, also passed away. I had been praying for her for over a year, and her passing while not unexpected was nonetheless very saddening.
Amy was quite simply one of the kindest people in my life. We shared quite a few memories. We worked together to plan epic pool parties for our class, spent some summers together at Bible camp and I got to help her arrange our 10 year class reunion a few years ago.
I first met Amy in 10th grade in the fall of 1996 and I have no problem recollecting one of my first memories of her friendship. Being that I was new to the school that, Amy took it upon herself to arrange a birthday party for me in the middle of the school day. She worked it out with the teachers and it was a wonderful surprise. Come to think of it, it was the only surprise birthday party I’ve ever had.
Amy married a wonderful man named Tyler and left behind 3 little children as well. I am so honored to have been Amy’s friend and I have a sure confidence that she loved Jesus more than anything in the world. I will get to see her in eternity because of our shared belief in Christ.
With that in mind, I’d like to dedicate this song to the memory of both Brandon and Amy. I’m so thankful for their impact on my life and hopeful for this message that they’ve “Come on Home”. Oh yeah, and if you care to, maybe share this one with some of your friends on facebook or something 🙂
